Michigan merchant token help.

I dug a wonderful Michigan merchant token while detecting in Dallas Texas. I am familiar with why tokens were used but wanted to know how close the date was on the token to the timeframe it was struck and used or if it is just a random date to satisfy to look of the token. Any information on the merchant would be great too. I found a street address for a 'Michigan Medal and Token Society' but was hoping for an email address. I Googled the name and came up with an address that is now in the middle of a major University campus. Many thanks!

Nice find, Satellite! It's a Civil War "store card" (merchant's token, typically traded as a cent), and is the variety listed as #MI40E-2a in U.S. Civil War Store Cards by George & Melvin Fuld. It's worth about $20 in Very Fine condition.

Thanks for the replies! Wow, so the date on this is real? If so, then it is my oldest 'dated' find and Civil War era to boot! I Googled 'MI40E-2a' and was able to find the exact token pictured on the net. Funny to see the same characteristics left from the striking such as the shallow finials about the 3, 4 and 5 oclock positions on the 'bust' side. Also my bust has a glob of metal hanging under the nose. Any opinions on the condition of this token? Thanks again! This site is really informative and well maintained. Have a great day!
