I was detecting at the surf this weekend and finding some minnies and such when this button popped out. It has the Mexican eagle with the snake in it's mouth. Above the head is a crown and it looks like several round objects over the laurels under the eagle. I pretty sure it is prior to the Civil War but I am not sure how much prior.
The back is an x shape for the eyelet and it is a one pieace button.
I think it is a good find, but I know I had a lot of fun finding it regardless!!
Sorry about the size. I gotta figure out how to resize this stuff!!

Re: Mexican Button

Mex buttons are a big prize for tx revolution hunters. They are rare to find and valuable. Many uniforms were taken from the mexican dead after the battle of san jacinto as trophies and in many cases these same uniforms were worn in confederate service later. Sort of a badge of honor that the wearer or his father etc was a veteran of san jacinto. For that reason some have been found in tn and va over the years. If that's what you have its an awesome find. Unfortunately I can't verify if your button is of the right period because I never had the luck to find one, but I have a book at home, and I just sent your photo to an expert so ill get back to you.

Re: Mexican Button

???I like it though!!There was a poster here from Mexico, that had a bunch of em.I was interesed in owning one because they have been found here in Calif. but we never came to an agreement.I dont recall seeing that type of "back",though

Re: Mexican Button

During the period of the French-supported Mexican Empire of Maximilian (1864-1867) there were two national flags of Mexico in use. The Mexican Republic of President Juárez used the traditional Mexican flag. Emperor Maximilian's government used a similar flag, but with a crown over the eagle's head. That is what you may have.

Re: Mexican Button

Maxilillian!! Of course!!! I have seen crowns almost exactly like that on French buttons. It makes sense for something like that to be found in deep South Texas!!
Of course that is not a definitive ID and I have not been able to find anything like it on the net, but it seems like the most likely conclusion. Thanks for the help and if anyone finds another like it let me know.

I cannot find anything on this button. ??? Sorta makes me cock my head sideways and scratch. :icon_scratch: Does anyone know what it is? Should I move this to "What is it"?
