I kick myself for this, but I think I found a small meteorite impact this past Saturday when I was out in the desert prospecting. If any of you know what a crater from a mortar round looks like that's what this looked like but the hole was only about three or four inches across with a raised center. Itt he raised center was about as high as the edges and it had a fan of dirt laid out to one side like it impacted at a nice angle. The ground was colored lighter than the surrounding earth and I swung my metal detector over the area only a little bit and didn't get any hits but I didn't get a picture of the thing or remember the exact spot it was because we were high tailing it out of a canyon ecause we discovered there was a mountain lion following us.

Please dont feed the Mountain Lions. Unfortunately people leave way too much trash and the Lions have figured out there is food there. Since I have never seen one for more than a few seconds you may have had a sick one.

Looking for meteorites is one of the things I always look for when walking the desert. I have never found one. I would think due to the angle they land they roll and bounce a lot. Just walk the line you think they rolled. I cant imagine a detector not getting a hard hit by one. Just turn off the iron discrimination and notch when you hunt.

Good Luck.

I understand that might be a normal circumstance. But this was in a very remote place. Not a speck of human influence. Hard to believe but if you weren't a stranger I might show you the place. Amazing. The reason we knew this mountain lion was on us was because on our way up a canyon I was detecting around in certain low areas around bedrock. There was lots of sand and I remember this particular spot and there were no tracks that we had seen on the way up but on the way back in that same spot that was clean before was fresh big cat tracks and that's where we found out it was following us at some point in a thirty minute span. We found more also further down.

I've got to go back!
