Meteorite?

Found this 6" down in my backyard.
VERY magnetic and heavy for its size.

No, I don't mess with e-bey, to much fake stuff there. I understand that they are worth a lot of money if they are real. Hard to verify by just a pic.

All my research so far indicates that it is an iron meteorite, I may polish a small spot and look at it with a microscope.

eBay may have some fake stuff, but its a great place to look to get a close value on things when people are bidding, if you don't use it I feel your missing out on a great tool.

It really looks like a piece of magnetite to me. I found a similar looking piece, although mine has some vesicles (small holes) in it. It was also very heavy for size and very magnetic. When I filed a small 'window' on mine, the material was shiny and silver like steel. I don't see the evidence (on the pic at least) of the high heat that is common to meteorites. There doesn't appear to be any fusion crust or thumbprints, so I think it is something terrestrial. Now the one TCIM has DOES appear to have a fusion crust. I would definitely look into that one!

Out here in the desert we hit alot of hot rocks, usually iron, sometimes magnetite, when we are nuggetshooting. The big magnetite one I found was laying on a dirt road and I noticed a weird rock as I was walking my dog. They are always worth taking a look at before assuming its just another hot rock. I try to take a look and see if its unusal before throwing a hot rock aside. What is interesting, is iron or magnetite rocks usually occur in areas with high minerlization, often occuring in gold bearing areas. Maybe your backyard holds some other treasure! Worth investigating maybe....

Maybe, but Iowa doesn't have much gold I don't think. It's magnetite according to the grey scratch it put on the bottom of my toilet tank lid.

Where are you from in Iowa? My dad was born in Hamburg Iowa. Toilet tank lid is a great idea for scratch test. Still, kinda interesting to find a hot rock like that in your backyard.
