Not a gemstone/mineral expert, however can see the rationale on the hematite suggestion.

Will a metal detector register a signal from hematite? NC does not appear to be natural location for this mineral?

Could be other metals in specimen, however based my limited research on meteorites it looks more a like an Iron/Nickel composition.

Welcome to Tnet and thanks input.

I sent the pictures to the website listed by Taz42o. It did state that 99% of the times it's not a meteorite so you and J-G most likely right on the ID part.

Does anyone know whether hematite naturally occur in NC?

Hi Iron Spike. The site Taz42o recommended is mine. Sorry... I don't believe it's a meteorite as I mentioned above... but don't stop looking! ;-)

Thanks feed-back and also see from your profile that you've been a member much longer than I have.

Any recommended sites for establishing whether it's hematite?

PS

Can I put check mark on post or should I await identification of specimen?
