I posted this on the California Metal Detecting Forum, and was directed here.... this was found while metal detecting in Arizona, in the hills west of Tucson.
I found this rock on my trip to Mexico and Tucson, AZ with the MXT. Blew my headphones off............ iron reading. It was on the surface, it's pretty weathered, and it's HEAVY as all "get out". I'm thinking it's probably magnetite, but it also passes all the online tests for a weathered meteorite, also (although it does "streak", it's grey, instead of black). Magnets stick to it like crazy.
The one thing that's bothering me, though, is that if it were magnetite, wouldn't there be some other specimens around?? I spent over three hours detecting in an area of over 10 acres or so (targets were sparse and I went fast, having to dodge saguaro, cholla, ocatillo, creosote bushes, etc.) and didn't find a single other piece. This was the only one. Here's some pics:
Half dollar for scale:
One side:
Another side:
Magnets stuck to it:
Did I mention it was HEAVY
Any thoughts would be appreciated!!
Thanks,
Rick
