metal whatsit found at site of early 18th century shipwreck

The following item is about 4 inches long. It is made of soe metal, not silver, maybe pewter or tin. It has a design on it as you can see. Was hollow. Maybe encased something like a wood fork handle? What do you think it could be?

Could very well be a knife or fork handle. early ones were filled with some type of plaster and it appears that is gone. Lost its ballast so to speak.

Thanks for the good information. I didn't know that. Plaster would seem a more likely fit than wood. Thanks again.
