I found this at a place that had a small military encampment in the late 1870s , it looks like a bottle top but is made of some kind of metal (lead /zinc/nickle maybe?) it has a cork still in the top and measures about 1 3/4 " ht. x 1 1/2" width . Any Ideas on what it is ?
Thanks for any help

Could it be the tip for a power horn?

Thanks for the reply's, good guess on the powderhorn tip but I think the opening is too large it is 1" diameter on the opening where the cork is. There are no attachment holes or anything , just seams on each side from the casting I assume. I cant see how it would have been attached to anything except maybe with resin or something. Also I think they were only using cartridges at that time mostly what I have found is 44 Remington and 45-70 s with benet primers .

It seems about the right size for a bottle topper shot glass...

Which, IMO, is a very cool find...

Thanks for the input it seems like it could be a bottle topper but doing some research I cant find anything like it. It may not be military issued but everything that has been found in the general area could be dated to the time period they were there. Any other ideas?

Thanks for the interest and ideas A2 , this one has really been bugging me, if it wasnt for the area it was in I wouldnt care so much . It seems like it should be a pretty easy one to identify but that hasnt been the case. the only thing I am kinda leaning towards is a leather powder flask top or something like it since there are no attachment points , I have looked at some pictures of old ones and it seems possible, it just doesnt have the usual brass top to pour the powder but maybe they replaced that part with a cork for transport or something? I dont know I just hope someone can help with a positive ID. Thanks to everyone who has looked and tried to help with it.

Ok I am really starting to go with the leather canteen idea , I looked at quite a few examples that look like they could fit the bill , I cant find an exact example of this piece or if the military would have issued something like this in the time period but I will keep researching. I did do a magnet test , which i should have done in the beginning Duh! and it is definitely ferrous , it just has a different coating not the same red rust like other iron stuff in the area , maybe a different alloy or oil treated or something . Please let me know what you all think about the canteen idea.
