So I was on a permission in northern Vermont that supposedly had war of 1812 activity and I found this copper plated disc. It’s a tad smaller than a US civil war Yankee breast plate but just as heavy. It looks to have had the same attachment prongs in the back made of iron. I haven’t cleaned it yet but at the bottom we thought we could see either a “18” or a “16”. Any suggestions on cleaning? The copper is starting to separate from the iron. Interesting but it’s probably a gas cap knowing my luck.

I’m told by an experience MDer in Vermont it’s likely a copper plated rosett, figures, at least its not a gas cap(:

Yeah, the more I look at it, it does to me too. Makes sense as I found lots of very old chain and oxen shoes close by.

Update: so I emailed a picture to a friend who detects Vermont primarily and he thinks it’s a rosette, I also emailed GW Williams from Hanover brass in Mechanicsville VA ( also a long time civil war hunter) and he tells me it’s an early militia plate and he has dug ones identical to it. So I’m going to say it’s a horses breast plate or a soldiers rosette. SOLVED!!!
