Metal object (coin?) found on beach inKitty Hawk, NC

I found this on the beach. Metal detector confirmed it is metal, but I don't know what metal. It sticks to a magnet. Is it worth trying to clean it? If so I'd appreciate any advice or opinion. Thanks.

If it sticks to a magnet... it's a piece of iron.

It is what we refer to as a "close"... as in close but no cigar. We all find these. Best of luck to you!
