Here in Washington State where logging is still big business (not as big as it use to be) The tree huggers do what is called "Spiking trees" , what they do is drive a large hardened steel spike into a tree. Then a logger unknowingly starts to cut the tree, hits the spike which snaps his chain. If he is very lucky, he doesn't get hurt, but usually they do. There have been people killed by these Eco-Terrorist. A few years ago, White's developed a curved coil so the loggers could scan the tree with White's industrial model, and it hasn't been as much as an issue as it use to be. So I guess you could also use detectors for life safety as well.
