Metal Detectors and Your Kids

Question for everyone here and I am sure I will get some biased opinions, but am interested in your thoughts.
I got back into the hobby of MD'ing and just bought the wife a detector for our anniversary.
Here is the question put forth to all to answer.
I have 2 girls ages 10 & 12 and they seem to be interested in metal detecting and I am thinking of getting them a detector to use when we as a family go out together.
What detector would be easy to use and not get them flustered and might make them lose interest in the hobby?

Thanks for your input in advance.

A few years back I bought a low end Bounty Hunter for my then 14 year old step son. We were going to the Jersey shore for a week and he had a blast with it. He found piles of clad, tokens and a bunch of other stuff, oddly no gold that I saw. Its easy to use and works pretty well, my 5 year old can even swing it. Good luck on your search.

Ol,
I have a Tesoro Compadre. It is a one knob, one battery (very easy to replace), entry level detector. No video screen to watch. It has discrimination and is very light (2-2.5 lbs). The pole is easily adjustable for both of the girls. It is just a turn on and go detector for under $200.00. Don't be swayed by the price. It is a good detector backed with a lifetime warranty and outstanding Tesoro repair/customer service. It also can be a nice backup detector for you. Check it out. I actually use it as my primary land machine (when I have a chance to go). Hope the information has helped.

Good luck with the decision and let us know what you decide.

That is what I am thinking, but since this would be a first investment I didn't want to sink a whole bunch of cash out just to have them lose interest.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My daughters are 10 and 11. They have a Bounty Hunter 202 and a Prizm II
The Prizm is lightweight ,easy to use, dead -on on the discriminator and also has the pinpointer, which they love. Since they are not the easiest on machines, that Prizm takes alot of abuse and still keeps beeping up the goodies.
I even use it alot as its easier on the back.

Thanks Gypsy for the input.
I was hoping that someone with kids would have some suggestions.

My 1st machine was a Prizm3, my girlfriend uses & loves it now. Very lightweight compared to most machines, I found a lot of coins & a few rings with it & the lil lady does well with it now. If you plan on buying a new one look on Whites website for a printable coupon for $50 off. Good luck!

My daughter is 11 and she uses a Tesoro Compadre, it's a great little detector. It gets around iron with ease and is great for coins and jewelry it weighs 2 pounds. Two other detectors I would recommend are the Tesoro Silver and the Cibola which has the pinpoint feature. Do yourself a huge favor stay away from Bounty Hunter, I gave my daughter my old BH since it wasn't worth the plactic they made it out of and nearly discouraged her from wanting to detect anymore. Good Luck and HH.
