metal detector question

Hey there,
I am new to site and am going to be new to metal detecting soon. I have always loved the idea and have always been the kind of guy who is always looking down hoping to find something, And I have! Not much but over the years lots of old coins and stuff, especially on beaches. My question is this. I am new to metal detecting and don't have much money (wife and 5 kids with 2 in college) etc.. I saw a "Bounty Hunter Tracker IV" for $127.00 new on a website. Is this a good detector to start with. I try to go to the ocean at least once a year and have found some coins and rings etc. without a detector, but really want to buy one because I love looking for just about anything. If someone would let me know I sure would appreciate it. BTW is there someplace I can learn the lingo? Clad, sandpits etc. Don't know what some of the terms posted are. Thanx for your time and help.

Wayne, That BH won't work at the beach, but for parks school ect. it's a good start up detector. If you get one I can help you get started just let me know!

wow! You guys are fast. Thanx. Is there a detector that will work for both dirt and sand. I don't want to be limited to just one type of search, but again can't afford too much. Thanx again. This is a great site. My kids found 3 silver dollars in plastic packets with numbers etc. on them. We tried to find the owners by advertising in the local Pennysaver but had no response. This was a couple of years ago so I guess they are now owned by us. I'll get back with some dates on the silver. I live in upstate New York along the shore of Lake Ontario so that's where we go to find things. Had a detector a few years back and I was using it at a state park beach called Fair Haven. Cheap detector and no good now, but it was cool because I found about 20 matchbox cars down about 15 inches. At that time my son was only about 6 so he thought it was really cool.

The real question to ask is, will a regular detector work on freshwater sand? I know there is a difference between fresshwater and saltwater sand because of the mineral content, but I never see any posts about freshwater beaches. BTW are the great lakes freswater or saltwater? I just can't remember.

Hey Mike. Excellent question, because I know when I had a detector I picked up a lot of hits but when i dug it was usually rocks (with minerals) or nothing at all so it must have been sand with mineral content. Ontario is freshwater and where I go there are a lot of rocks, stone and some shell. And the sand is sometimes black so it must have mineral in it.Or maybe just oil from so much pollution!I do go to Assateague Island in Maryland every other year or so. The brochures for the area always say that you can't walk a mile without finding a coin of some sort. And I have found that to be the case even without a detector. Thanx again.

Yes, I use a Fisher CZ-20 in sand and water here in Chicagoland.? My old BH worked well on the beach there too.? Didn't get the depth but did get the goods it went over wihtin it's range.? There is a world of difference between freshwater beach hunting and saltwater beach hunting.? Yes Mike, the Great Lakes are an inland waterway and are freshwater.? There are of course areas where black sand exists within them, and that makes it tough though mostly near the iron producing areas and where those big old ships lie wasting away.

Yes, most mid to high end machines will do fine in both fresh water beaches and dry ground also.? Check websites for Fisher, White's, Tesoro, Garrett, Minelab and check the features and then go price comparson shopping.

Hi Gonefishin. I'm fairly new to this metal detecting hobby too. I am also pretty biased toward my MXT. It's a higher end machine with a middle of the road price ($700) It has 3 completely differemt programs you can choose from: Coin/Jewelry...Relic...Prospecting. All 3 produce different tones (audio) and readouts on the screen. It pinpoints and tells the depth of targets. Kind of a "jack of all trades" machine. I've used it for a little over 3 months now (still getting used to it) and it's performed amazingly well for me. Well, like I said , I am biased towards it. And long winded occasionally! Welcome to the forum. Stick around here and you will definitely get the bug and be hooked on detecting. Good luck.

Welcome, you are in the right place to get some good info. I am new too but have picked up some very good info. My pick is the Tesoro Lobo ST. It is a gold detector but does good on coins, jewelry, and relics. I haven't gotten mine yet but from what I read and from posts, it should do me fine. It doesn't have the fancy display but should do me fine.

Just my 2 cents worth.

Gonefishin, If you look at the manufacturers website links at the top of this page you will find many detectors have a jewelry beach setting. I agree that the real questions is freshwater or saltwater beaches. Most detectors will work well at freshwater beaches but saltwater beaches have a whole different set of problems associated with them. Look at the literature for any detector you are considering and select one that has the features you need. Good luck and good hunting! Jim Cal

Hi all, I guess u can say I am a newbie. I did some hunting in 1979 used a White's 5000 or 6000, not really sure, been so long ago. I hunted with it and had good luck with it, I was getting to the point to where I could tell good stuff from trash. Gotten into somethings and had to sell it. I had been wanting to get back into MD again so I just brought a new White's MXT. Got to try it out the last 2 days. I have review the tape I gotten with it and read the Owner's Guide over at least 4 times. I set it up according to the book and tape, is there any more information I can get on the MXT as to the best setting for this MD ? If so can someone put me in the right place. If someone has a MXT and has any good tips please post them or email them to me. Any help would be nice, I am open for any info anyone has to offer. This is my first post and I have been a member for a while, just been reading alot and chatting in the chat room. Hope to hear from someone soon, this is one great site. I have had some luck with the MXT, not alot but I still am open for any good tips or info. :) ;) ::)
