Metal detecting vs Coin roll hunting Finds%

Agreed, but the md is fun. Coin roll hunting builds muscles(just try getting 4 boxes of nickels to the car).

Its fun but it gets tiring digging endless crappy zinc pennies plus all the sites Ive been to lately have been real dogs

My detecting finds always blow my CRHing finds out of the water. No way would I ever roll hunt the quality of silvers that I get MDing. I dug close to 15 Barbers last year, including halves and quarters. I've never roll hunted a seated silver but I have dug one. My oldest find in the dirt was a spanish silver dated 1758, and my wheat count one year was 600+. I've never roll hunted a silver dollar, but I have dug two. My silver count MDing for two years is around 150+

I've never crhed a diamond ring, but I have md'ed one at the beach.

I found 16 gold rings while MD and never found 1 CRHing. So I will still MD for the gold and CRH for the silver.....Matt

I pulled two walking liberty half dollars out of the same hole last week metal detecting and the thrill is still with me
(see: http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,387917.0.html )
Finding nice coins coin roll hunting is fun, but I don't get anywhere near the satisfaction as digging a coin.
To put it another way, I would easily sell any silver coins from CRH for their melt value, but I don't think I'd ever sell a silver coin that I dug. The coin I dug has a story to go with it and that makes it special to me.

Ive been metal detecting for over a year now, Heavily coin roll hunting about the same amount of time Metal detecting silver coin finds -4. Coin roll hunting finds -approx 350. That means I have to go out at least 90 times metal detecting before I find any silver Guess which one I prefer? :laughing7:

Ouch..Ive found about 8 Silvers so far this year MD, and maybe the same CRH.
When I find a Silver CRH, its just not the same as digging it out of the ground, where its been for 50 plus years, and I know my chances of digging a Barber Quarter are much greater then finding them in circulation. Im sure if you spent some more time digging in the right places you would agree

Plus I treat my CRH'ing finds as my "Investment" and my Digging finds are much more special to me..
But thats just how I feel...I like getting Silver anyway I can.

well i can will never find a ring or necklace CRHin but i doubt in the long term anyone can find more silver MDin then CRHin in my area.

I've never found a merc in any dimes. I've got 4 in the past 2 days at the park behind my house.

Although, I've never found a half doller swinging my detector let alone silver.

They are both satisfying hobbies, but with MD alot less stressful...no dumping, fees, etc. I found a 1798 cent the other day...doubt I'll ever see that CRH. CRH has almost turned into work as of late, less finds and a pain to dump. I hardly ever find silver MD though.

Each and every poster here makes a good point. I'm just starting my eighth year of detecting. My silver count increased each of the first four years and has decreased ever since. My oldest, most valueable, and most cherished coins have come from detecting. I have one Barber half from each hobby, Two seated dimes detecting to 1 seated dime CRH. I guess it is a question of quantity versus quality. In my soil no nickel ever dug will be worth much, Wheaties and Indians, never look too good. Silver comes out great most of the time. The two hobbies compliment each other very well. I belong to a detecting club of about 30 members, and I don't know of any other member who CRHs. Some bottle hunt and some scout out garage sales and flea markets. I love hearing the other guys in our club say, that Metal Detecting is the "only" hobby that pays for itself. Many of them may dig more silver than me, but the whole group doesn't find as much silver as me.

I don't detect that much, but to me CRHing is like gambling whereas MDing is a game of skill. Sure, you can research some good banks and build teller connections to get better finds CRHing. But I think the thrill of looking over old maps of your site, finding an old homestead and finding some relics is greater than the thrill of finding a great bank.
