Metal Detecting Laws in Bulgaria

perdidogringo, I know those compendium type sites, that attempt to make lists for all the various countries in Europe (and , for example, laws in the USA's 50 state parks) are well-intentioned. I know they are sincerely trying to draft up and compile a list, so that others can just check a compiled list. But the devil is in the details :(

All too often the data used to compile such lists comes from sincere md'rs in the past, that went in asking "what are the laws for metal detecting here?" Or "Hi, is it ok to metal detect?", etc.... The *pressing question* gets passed up the chain till ..... you guessed it ..... it lands on the desk of a purist archie. Who will spew out all sorts of dire sounding cr#p . Eg.: pulling from "cultural heritage" type wording.

For example: If a European got ready to come to the USA, and asked enough bored archies, he might get dire answers from archies who hate md'rs, who couch their answer in terms of ARPA. Or lost & found laws. Or Mel Fisher legal hassles. Or IRS tax laws. Blah blah blah. And .... heck, they might even be able to cite chapter and verse that sounds very dire to us. Eh ? But as you know, the reality is far different. That ... unless you're snooping around obvious historic sensitive monuments, you're ok.

So in many of those countries of Europe, that appear (according to the compendium attempts) to have dire sounding "no's", yet the reality is far different. For example: Those laws might only apply to public land (or federal, or archie spots, etc...) Yet have no bearing on private land (farmer's fields with permission).

Sadly, here's what happens next though: If a skittish person reads this, that .... perhaps reality is different ..... guess what they do "just to make sure" : They go ask a bored govt. pencil pusher bureaucrat. Do you see the vicious circle ? Sheesk, it's as if we can be our own worst enemy. Just avoid obvious historic sensitive monuments, and go help that farmer find the gold ring he just lost.
