I am taking a gem trip this summer with some friends to North Carolina. I will be in Franklin, Maggie Valley and Ashville over the time I am there. How harsh are the laws for metal detecting down there. I will not be near the beaches at all so it is all inland. I am sure Franklin will be easier to get permissions as it is a small town, but what about Ashville? Lot of history and there seems to be some great spots worth hunting if allowed. Does anyone hunt around Ashville?

Matty,
There are several folks here on Tnet that detect the Asheville and Eastern NC area. I know "Rockhopper" is in Asheville. I am about 20 minutes from Asheville and have been at about 50/50 for gaining permissions since we moved to the area in 2012.
The rules are pretty much the same here too. Get permission, and no detecting in the state parks. Its a beautiful area here in the NC mountains. You should have a blast gem hunting. Lot's of gems in this area.
Good luck to you,

P.S. You may be able to up your odds by not mentioning that you are a Yankee. I've run into folks here that think the CW is still on. :tongue3:

Awesome, I will probably only get a few hours to detect in each place I am going, but I would kick myself if I didn't bring my detector. The trip is all about gems but too much good history to pass up the change to detect. I will turn on some of that southern Delaware accent I have picked up, and play up my Eagle scout card since that helps with permissions. I am excited to go as it will be my first time to North Carolina and it looks beautiful!
