Hi,I was wondering how everyone else got into this hobby. As for me i guess i've always been interested in finding things that are "lost" or forgotten. As a kid I would search the woods endlessly, looking for who knows what.Always thinking I was going to find remnants of some lost civilization or something. As an adult,it's the history of the objects I find ,that intrigue me.I picked up my 1st. MD a couple years ago.It belonged to a friend of mine.I bought my 1st MD only about a year ago.I haven't quit swinging it since. :)Any stories,anybody?H.H.

My first go at a detector was in Vung Tau Viet Nam with a friend of mine who was a MP.

I got into it in the Early to mid 60's. MY GRANDMOTHER, & her BOYFRIEND would go to FLORIDA every winter and while there search the beaches. I borrowed her detector one day and my first ever find was a 1919 wheatie. I WAS HOOKED EVER SINSE ; jeff

Started in 1976, introduced by a co-worker.? My first detector was a Compass 77B, and then a year later I bought a Whites Coinmaster 5. Neither had discrimination.

Hi,
When I was a teenager I went looking for arrow heads. Then as I got older and went fishing and mushrooming I would find different none valuable things arounds me. While laying in the hospital one day a treasure show came on and I said if I ever get out of here I am going to buy a MD. That was a year and a half ago and when I'm well I am out looking for what people have left behind for me to find. I haven't found any thing of value but I sure have enjoyed myself. I wish I had a THing partner someday maybe.

Thanks Jeff but I am already in the Central Vermont club and they already have partners and they aren't realy interested in MDing with a woman their wife might get mad. I guess.

MABY there just afraid you'll show them up.? ? ? ? ? Hopefully, you'll find someone, Good luck & Happy Hunting ; jeff

Grew up in Louisiana and got a toy detector for Christmas around 1977. Found nails and spark plugs. Around the same time I found an old dump by our house. There was an old chair there, so I felt around the cushion and pulled out a 1937 wheatie and a 1942 mercury dime. Been hooked ever since, but began seriously about 11 years ago.

I found a cheapy ($5.00) kids detector at a yard sale.. found some jewelry and coins with it. Gave it to my grandkids when I moved 6 years ago...but always wanted another better one. Finallly got one this past Christmas.. so ready to go as soon as the snow melts!
I did go out for about 10 minutes today .. on the side of the street in front of my house (where the snow plow had been.... "practicing" ... and found a nail, a nut and a old bottle cap! Yeah!! At least I got out!

Started out in early 80's w/stack of treasure mags anold gentleman gave me. He had LOTS of mason jars of old silver he found around town. Acquired a Fisher 550 tried it and was hooked for life.

i was given one by my father when i was a kid. never found much. i did not have the patience to learn how to do it right. i saw a commercial for whites one night at around 2 in the am about six months ago and figured what the heck. found a merc my first time out and i'm completely hooked

Several years ago my father had a cheap detector and let me play with it around the yard. I spent hours finding pennies and small change which I immediately took to the store and got penny candy. Now that I am an adult I have had to retire early due to a disability. I can't get around too well and needed something, some hobby to get me out and busy and to get a little exercise that isn't too strenuous. I decided detecting is something I could do so I thought I would give it a try. My wife bought me a detector for Christmas. In the few weeks I have been doing it I have become fascinated at what finds I have seen posted on the various treasure hunters web sites. I have found a few coins in my limited experience and have got into researching historic sites for possible future detecting. So far I have located a Civil War battle site that was pretty much forgotten over the years and I am going to try to get permission to search it. It is on private property now but was Indian Territory when the battle took place in 1861. I don't expect to find much if anything, but even one expended bullet would be a treasure to me. I felt a deep sense of satisfaction from locating this site and just knowing I was standing on "hallowed ground" as Lincoln said. It's a fascinating and interesting hobby especially if you go into researching the origin of some of the things you might recover. My imagination would run wild if I were to discover an old coin, wondering who might have lost it and when and what the circumstances were. I am not in it to get rich but for the purely aesthetic values and sheer satisfaction of bringing these images to mind. If I do find a significant artifact I will most likely photograph it and donate it to one of the local museaums for others to enjoy.

My dad built his first detector in the early 60's using a hand wound coil & a transistor radio. He never had much moneyin those days but he is a premier horse trader & got into a commercial machine later on. Now he has several machines. I was always interested but never had the bucks or time at the same time. I finally got my own first machine two years ago last June. Whites QXT Pro. Have it & a DFX now & I go every chance I get. I keep one in my truck. I have been medically retired since 1996 but I own an RV Park that has kept me busy 24-7 for ten years. I am closing a sale on it now & will be fully retired soon. I intend to spend at least 40% of my free time detecting. Every find is treasure to me. My ultimate goal is to find an old gold coin. Spotz

always wanted a MDer growing up...a yr ago i stumbled onty a MDing website and it sparked my intrest again.
after some research i bought a landstar and next thing you know, im hopelessly addicted..

I got an orange radio shack detector when I was thirteen, back in1980, and the first neat thing I found was a complete octagon-barrelled rifle(minus the wood), in my schools feild. I been hooked since.

Got my detector as a Christmas gift, and within 30 seconds of turning it on the first time, found a gold pocketwatch in our front yard.

I've always had a coin collection, my grandfather started when he was a kid, then in 73 my ex father-in-law showed me an old detector he had and I thought what a great way to add to my collection. I first day out I think I found an old bib overall button but I was hooked. HH Bob.B

vwayne1, I got the same detector from my grandfather about the same time as you!!, my first find was an old Yale lock about 3" down in compact soil. I was amazed at the fact that the thing could locate objects under ground, and was sure there was a whole world of things to find. I got away from it for a long time but-- I'M BACK !!!!
