Metal Detecting Gods feel sorry for old Wyatt.....help ease the schoolhouse DTs

Well.......It was brutally cold this morning, and the place I'd been excited about going to...well, I came to find out that it has been re-landscaped and the first thing I found was a clad quarter....obviously in the ground for a long time....at about 6 inches. Not far from that...a clad dime and a nickel, similarly deep. I spent about an hour there....no old stuff.

Got happy feet and had to look for greener grass....so into the older part of Carmichaels....to a fantastic old yellow brick Victorian that was built by a doctor in the 1890s....who never lost much. I did manage a pair of old (and really pitiful looking) wheats...a 1914...and then a 1910. No silver....need another spot.

I remembered my dentist's office...and the fact that I'd been given permission to detect there. It was a block from where I was....so off I went. I was there for about 15 seconds....the very first hit was the 44 quarter in the scan. It was at about 5 inches...maybe 5 1/2". I stayed there for another hour or so....picked up some 50's wheaties....and decided to head home for a sandwich. I got home at 1:30 pm....with not much to show for my effort....the 44 quarter was the lifesaver. I cleaned up the clad and threw it in the can.

Had a bologna sandwich and decided to head to the bottom of the hill...no, I would not let myself go back to the old school. I have been eyeing a yard up the hill from there....pretty ordinary looking home....with an old, worn yard. Got permission from the lady to detect, and was there a total of 2 hours. I got a silver rosie first....not bad...about 4 inches down. Perhaps 20 minutes into the hunt I got an incredibly solid "half dollar" hit....and I'm starting to be less skeptical of those these days....and I shifted into archeologist mode and gave this one wide berth....no fair scratching it if it does turn out to be a half. It was this 42 walking liberty half...not more than 2 inches down......and I'm pleased to say there are no scratches on it. It's amazing how white those things look against the topsoil. I'll never get used to that.

Worked around that yard some more.....dug a few wheats...found a couple clad dimes....and a cootie leg (remember the game "Cootie") in a hole with a wheatie. Then I got a "quarter" hit......and scored a silver rosie...then another....and the signal was still there....the 42 merc was the last to come out of that hole.

I guess it doesn't pay me to drive to a neighboring town.....my own little community seems to do me much better.

My back hurts a little....but I'm still all smiles. The MDing Gods had pity on me today....and for that I am grateful. I'll post a second picture of the silver once its cleaned up. I wanted to show before and after shots this time.

Very impressive, Wyatt! The half is a great find. Looking forward to what you find on the next hunt.

MAN WHAT IS IT WITH YOU AND THESE HALFS!! :o you find more halves than anyone around here!.......and that one is a real beauty!! that haul would be a stellar day around here! great job!!

That's my first S minted rosie this year, so that was kind of cool too. That one goes into the album of dug dimes.

White,

good day, nice finds.

What, no photo of the Cootie Leg?

Yellow or green?

Now that would be a hobby. Collecting old Cootie parts. Be something to put on your resume. Hobbies or interest: "I collect Cootie parts"

have a good un.............

The halves sure have been showing up and I sure am happy about that!.....The funny thing...is that's my 6th walker. I've found only one 40 percent silver Kennedy (a 67) one clad half (a 96 with a mower gouge)......and never have I found a Franklin half.....and that seems really odd to me.

I ended up throwing away the cootie leg......it was a red one. I found a little scotty dog cookie cutter too...like my sister's had when they were little.

I think that if I could offer one tip...it would be...look for old worn grass...and less prominent homes. Rich people didn't lose much. People of more modest means....give it to the kids....easy come - easy go.

Want to hear a really good one?

The man who lives where I got the walker......has a detector in the closet that he got as a christmas gift and never even tried. It's been in the closet for 10 years. I'm sure glad he never got a hankerin' to take it for a spin.....because if he'd found that walker in his own yard....my poor little town would have been whisked clean 10 years ago.

Great silver Wyatt. I still have not found a Walker. It is definately on my wish list though. Sounds like you had a really great day. Congrats....Lance

Hi Lance......You find stuff that's worth lots more than an old walker....heck, they're fun to dig, but not really that valuable....not the common ones anyway.

I don't know why it's my turn for half dollars......but I sure am grateful for it. I think the detecting bug never bit in this little town. It's been a real gas for me since Oct 1st when I found my first silver coin in this town. Since then, I've unearthed 3 walkers......how....I don't know.

I'm finally getting the hang of using the macro on this camera. If you right click on the image....and select view image in another window....all 6 are pictured...including the quarter.

Nice finds, it beats my 36cents I found at a hunted out park in town today.? Last year I found my first Indian Head Penny there.? It started pouring today, so it cut my hunt short.? ?Someday I hope to find a Walker or any halve for that matter.
Way to go.
Happy huntin.

One thing that I do differently from most people......is the thing that I believe is the key to being successful in finding silver. If I don't find any silver in an hour or so where I'm hunting...I will go someplace else. Silver's easy to find, but only if it happens to be where you're swinging your coil. If you aren't finding any...then you need a new spot. There are so many yards here....that I won't waste time at unproductive places. I intentionally look for the more unassuming properties.

The place I hunted last today...that gave up 5 pieces of silver...was built in 1954. The average MDing enthusiast would have looked at the place and not given it a second thought. The house is quite ordinary looking. The big draw for me was the old, worn lawn. It looked as though it had never been resodded or re-graded. Around here....those places still hold silver coins if nobody has detected them yet.

? ? ? Silver's ok to find I guess. ? I mean, if you like that sorta thing. ?

? ?

? ? ? ? And boy!! ? Do I ever like that sorta thing!! ?Great finds!! ? ? ?WTG!! ? ? ? HH

Re: Metal Detecting Gods feel sorry for old Wyatt.....help ease the schoolhouse

There's a "down" side to my style of detecting......and that's the fact that while I'm skimming the easy silver....The gold (if there is any) remains there until I get back...and sometimes I never do.

Great job Wyatt. Your last name must be Walker!
