Aren't caulks the pointy things that protrude from the shoe. Those round things on that shoe are what held the caulks. The "bumps" are called caulks. They are to increase traction in mud or ice. This particular shoe has both toe and heel caulks.
yeah it must have been made for traction because I found it along the Delaware Hudson canal in PA. the canal shipped coal from PA down to the Hudson River on to New York City. the barges that were used had no engines at the tome of coarse they just went with the flow of water in the canal. The canal had many locks to raise or lower the barges, much like the panama canal but on a much smaller scale. along the canal is a raised walking path that the barges would be pulled by a team of two horses and a driver so I would imagine during rain the horses would need the extra traction in the mud. and judging by the size of the horseshoe the horses must have been large. That is the oddest horse shoe I have ever seen. I'd call that one a "keeper" just for show and tell.
The names probably depend on where you live. Horsey stuff changes regionally and through time.Aren't caulks the pointy things that protrude from the shoe. Those round things on that shoe are what held the caulks.
