I found this heavily rust encrusted metal circle/washer? It was deep in the woods along an old path in New England. It is attracted to a magnet, so iron or steel is my guess of material...It is thin, but what has me baffled is the striations on each side. There are many parallel rough lines. Could this be early and hand made? Time frame? Use? Mostly I just found gunshot and bullets. I am also curious about the small lead bullets? I was looking for musket balls but not one around!

Thanks for looking.

Can we see what the flip side of your object looks like?

The bullets with it look like .22 LR (rimfire)

I banged the heck of the iron to chunk off some of the rust to expose the metal...It seems to be the same on both sides. Thanks so much for looking!

Just a common steel washer, not hand made, but fairly old based on the oxidation.
The striation pattern, I believe is just how the oxidation has exposed the extrusion pattern or 'grain' of the metal.

Thanks. It was in the area of1600s activity...not that I really thought it was that old but I wondered if old iron would look different if it was quite a bit older... Thanks

My detector gives a silver quarter signal for big iron washers and iron rings. I have dug similar ones to yours in the old woods this year. Maybe washer for big nut and bolt for early telephone/power poles.

Thanks....I have been fooled many times by strong iron. Thanks for the input.

The piece in the second and third pics with the bullets is interesting.... can we see the other side of it?

Surely....Here are a couple of other photos of that piece. It seems to have lead on the end, a center piece, and a brass circle and nub?
