Metal Alloy marked " ZAP

Metal Alloy marked " ZAP'

hELLO,

i'M ARGEE, we have one fine which is a metal alloy approximately 8 x 10 inches and around 2 inches thick. The color of the metal is grayish white and it is very hard that it can not be cut even by torch or acetylene.

It has a marking of Z A P in capsLock (wherein others says that it stands for Zink Alloy Platinum).

Attached is a picture of one of the item for your viewing.

Can you help us identify the metal alloy? does it have a commercial value of a prfecious metal?

Argee

Re: Metal Alloy marked " ZAP'

Platinum is not usually alloyed with zinc. In the investment casting process used for jewelry, it causes emrittlement and vaporization issues. Many of the alloys used in other precious metals do not produce positive results with platinum because of various metalurgical limitations. Platinum is hard, and has a higher melting point than gold, but it would not hold up under a cutting torch as your sample did. A quick check to help you detrmine the metal is to do a density check in water.

It appears to be a lid of some sort. The two tabs on the bottom slip into slots and note that upper part has 2 round indentations that may have been used to insert bolts to attach to opening. Or perhaps a handle.

Would zinc, aluminnum or platinum show such wear as noted on upper left?

Then again, perhaps the door for a U.F.O glovebox.

Another thought....Armor plate lid for gun hole cover for Sherman Tank

Interesting find nonetheless.

Hope someone figures this one out.

Platinum is only medium hard on the Mohr's Scale(4-4.5),iron is 4-5 ,gold is 2.5-3,and diamond is 10.

I don't know if a zinc- platinum alloy is a possibility as zinc boils at 907 degrees centigrade and platinum melts at 1768.3 degrees centigrade.

An oxy/acetylene torch will melt platinum but will "cut" neither platinum nor zinc.

A platinum ingot,2"x8"x10" would weigh around 123 pounds while a zinc ingot would weigh about 41 pounds.

Muratic acid will react with zinc but not platinum.

My guess would be that it is either a zinc or zinc - lead alloy.

Re: Metal Alloy marked " ZAP'

The ZA I could buy, even though it's pretty rough looking for an ingot unless it was slag, but I can't get my head around "ZAP". It could be from an old gravity foundry, and the "ZA" stands for zinc-aluminum, and the "P" for some sort of post-casting slag or scrap.

Re: Metal Alloy marked " ZAP'

Received a message from ARGEE.

Hoping that Argee posts that message on here.

It appears that there is a layer of asphalt or similar substance along with a layer of what may may concrete.

The object was found on a ship wreck.

There is other information that can be provided on the message.

I know I have seen one of these at some point in my naval carrer, perhaps when our ship was in drydock.I believe the ones I saw were mounted to bottom of keel in the area of the stern and were made of zinc. The zinc may have provided some sort of rust inhibiting action on hull,I'm not positive though. The tabs were used as a method to secure too hull.Hope this helps.

Boys and Girls:

We are getting damn close to solving this matter.

Upper left and right are numbers that perhaps coincided with a "TILE" pattern for a hull construction, sort of a puzzle configuration.

DAMN! Figuring things out are about exiting as metal detecting. Nice....suncontra...whispers...diamondjim..Cyn.. every shot helps.

Great job dudes and dudas!

DIAMONDJIM!!

I just knew you did not mean to throw in the towel.

It's hard to give up on this forum isn't it?
