I mentioned before that you were going to have some gold jewelry melted down. It had some broken rings and miss matching earrings and took it to Our jeweler. I paid $25 and got this for my husband a week later. He loves it.

Next is going to be this scrap piece

Nice.....do they mark it when it is reformed? Ex. 10k....14k....etc?

Yep it's marked on the bail and also the side of the cross, 14k.

Looks great! I am going to try and melt my own and cast it into some ingots-bars. Good luck!..............Scott.

You might want to think twice before you do that. I have done it.... but the problem lies in that you destroy all evidence that your final product is silver... And if you come to sell it, anyone who wants to purchase it will have to assay it.... and that will cost.

So what I have been doing, of late, is taking the scrap and sending it off to a reputable refinery { I choose PG&G... but ARA. Midwest, etc .. all would work], and get them to refine it into 10 ounce bars. This way, it is assayed and stamped with the purity, and you will not have to get it assayed again.

How much do they charge to do 10 oz bars? What do they do with the overage?

Here are the numbers from their website... As to overage... well, if you have enough silver for one, but not two [as an example], you could either get a cheque for the overage, or get some smaller bars made.

Silver accepted All forms of sterling silver, flatware, silverware, serving ware, candlesticks marked 925, 900, 800 and other.
All coins and jewelry that have a silver content. Reclaimed silver from photography and other industrial processes.
All coins of silver from 999 silver 90% silver 80% silver .720 silver and more.
All US coins from 1964 and earlier.
***We do not accept silver plated items.***
Rates paid.
For silver lots of less than ten oz and better than 75% pure we pay 90% of market
for lots of more than ten oz we can pay 95% of market.
for lots over 1000 oz we can pay 96.5% of market.
Less than 75% but greater than 45% lots are on a contract basis. but are usualy 80% or better on pay out.
lots of less than %40 purity are on a contract basis.

that is the rate paid if buying from us correct? I didn't see a rate they charge for turning our scrap into bars, I will call them, sounds like a great idea. I went and weighed some of my 108 piece Sterling Silverware I found recently to see how many spoons forks etc weight ...I could get 15 10 oz bars from that, lol but don`t think I will melt those down

Send it off to the refiner or, if you don't have enough to send, sometimes its worth going to someone who buys/sells bullion who might be able to pay you more than the refiner directly because they send out bulk lots.

Like others have mentioned, if you melt it down yourself, when you sell it you will have to get it assayed or else the person buying it will either only buy it at a discount (since its a gamble) or simply refuse to buy it. Anyone can melt down a chunk of metal and stamp 14K (or whatever) on it and thus its hard to verify if its really gold or just gold plated.

$25 bucks, wow what a great deal !!
Beautiful piece and fun Idea !!
Keep @ it and HH !!
