Found this near a civil war battlefield in NW Missouri. Seems to be lead (non magnetic) and color seems right. If that is what it is, would it be possible it's melted lead from the civil war? Only thing close by are farm fields. Thanks for any input!

If it's lead it could very well be melted lead from a camp fire. The bullets had paper around them to hold the powder and sometimes the bullets would be used to start fires. Found any other camp stuff around? d2

I didn't find much else in the area except a few rust pieces of iron (a square piece about 1/2 inch thick and sides about two inches long, and a large iron bolt). I assume those are from farm equipment of some sort. Found a few other pieces of obvious more modern trash, but not very many signals in the area. Didn't spend a whole lot of time there. Was sampling a new area and seeing if it's worth looking around more or if I should try a different spot. The "lead" wasn't too deep, but if it is possibly from the civil war it'd be worth looking around there more. Certainly couldn't have been detected much if someone missed that signal.

Melted lead? Possibly.

Civil War? Four years out of 217 (figuring c.1800 for MO). Less than 2% chance. ;-)

It's not nearly that much of a long shot I don't think. The area I found it in has been nothing more than a farm field since the time of the battle and this area is definitely within the area where said battle took place. I guess what I am asking is if this is possibly melted lead, does it make sense that it was from the civil war versus something you'd find on the far out skirts of a farm field?

More to the north, Independence. I'd like to find somewhere to hunt in Lonejack, though. I haven't hunted for civil war relics before so I'm not going to be very good at identifying them.

Also I should note it's about 2 inches by 2 inches..not a very small piece and definitely seems heavy for it's size.

The only way to know is too go back and hunt that spot hard. If it's from a CW site then you should find a few more relics like bullets or buttons. That's really the only way to know but that's the fun part. We find lots of melt at known camps and when we stumble on it we slow done and hunt hard.

Well I suppose that's as good a reason as any to go back there and investigate it more thoroughly.
