Mel Fisher’s Treasures has recently made an agreement with Dr. Eugene Lyon for exclusive rights to all his historical research. Dr.Lyon is one of the world’s leading experts on Spanish Colonial Florida history and the Spanish maritime system. He holds a PhD from the University of Florida.
From data he gathered at the Archive of the Indies in Seville, Spain, Dr. Lyon was able to help Mel Fisher locate and definitively indentify the sunken ships the Atocha and Santa Margarita in the lower Florida Keys. His book “The Search for the Atocha” is considered the most authoritative historical account of Mel Fisher’s search for these two Spanish galleons.
Dr. Lyon’s honors include being named Official in the Order of Isabella from King Juan Carlos of Spain and the grade of Comendador in the Order of Christopher Columbus from the President of the Dominican Republic. In 2005, he received the Mel Fisher Lifetime Achievement Award.
Over the past 40 years, Dr. Lyon has accumulated and translated a vast amount of historical information about New World trade routes and Spanish ships that were lost at sea during the time period of 1550 to 1750. This includes court of inquiry records and personal testimony from the Captains and crew of many lost vessels and other eyewitness accounts of the wrecks, including approximate locations of the shipwrecks.
Mel Fisher’s VP Director of Operations Gary Randolph spoke about the significance of this recent agreement with Dr. Lyon: “This agreement paves the way for the future of Mel Fisher’s Treasures. Only a handful of people in the world are able to translate the ancient Spanish writings from the 16th century and recover the proprietary historical information about the ships that were lost at sea. With this information, we now have enough solid targets that our children’s children will have to finish the work.”
