Medieval Coin Treasure Found in Southern Bulgaria Gold & Silver

Treasure of 79 golden and silver coins was found by archaeologists in a rock crack near the Rodopi mountain Gulabovo village.

The find consists of 5 Byzantine hyperperones and 74 Venetian grossso, the crew's chief d-r Borislav Borislavov announced.

The coins were found at hardly 30 cm underground in a rock's crack, covered with stones.

The crack is in the bases of a Thracian sanctuary, which was functioning as a Christian temple.

The way the coins have been buried is also a way of oblation typical for the ancient Thracians.

The five golden Byzantine coins weight between 4 and 4,5 grams have unique workmanship and are dated between 1295 and 1328 year.

The silver Venetian coins are dated from the beginning of XIII century.
