This is a strange website to post this, but there are alot of big brains here and I'm not sure where to start. My cousin just turned 50 and started to have problems and ended up in the hospital and told her kidneys are Hardly working.
She is going to have to go to dialysis 3-5 days a week. As of now her insurance is only giving her the option of 2 places to receive the dialysis. If she goes elsewhere, insurance won't pay. Both places are 1 1/2 hours away . Dialysis will take 3 to 4 hours each day she goes. She don't drive, never has. Her husband has to work to pay the bills, her parents are disabled, the rest of us all got young kids and work, the amount of time involved isn't feasible for how many times a week we'd have to do it.
If she doesn't get it, she will die.. Is there any law or anything that would make it possible to twist the insurance companies arm and force them to allow her to receive treatment closer to home ? Or is their some sort of service for lower income families to receive transportation To treatments .. Or any other suggestions?
Thanks. Again, I apologize for this having zero to do with treasure hunting .

I would contact the insurance company and explain this to them. I know with my insurance their list of approved providers (in network) is paid at a higher rate than the out of network providers. However with the out of network providers they still pay something just not as much. Contact the local providers and see what they can do to help as well. I hope your cousin feels better.

Jimmi First off ask her Dr. if this Qualifies for disability if so before you go to SS. office there are some forms to take to her Doctors have them fill them out and then go. She may be able to get Medicare aid as her primary Ins. You can get those forms from your local SS office These will get you to the front of the line.
Also depending were you live there are shuttles ck. with your town or city services paid by your tax's

Good luck but the more you dig there are services out there. This is either a tuff one or easy one depends how load you can scream. Do it before the kings law comes into focus.

Thanks guys. Yes we are afraid of Obama Care(less) coming into effect. As of this morning her insurance says that they may be able to move it closer to home .. It's hard to get tbe facts out of her, cause she is Alil foggy from 3 strokes she had in the hospital. I wish i could speak to the Insurance for her, but I'm just a cousin, they won't tell me nothing. Her parents , well forget that .... All they do is speak of doom and expect the worst . Soooo I'm waiting on her husband to get home and try to get him to figure out what's going on, but frankly he's a real " bleep". And hard to deal with.
But I will tell her of the SS angle . But with Obama care coming , coming is that a less safe option than using personal insurance? I can't see how it wouldn't qualify as a disability, the dialysis is only to hold her over till a transplant. And will probably consume 20 hours of her week.
Again thanks so much... I didnt know where to begin, so this is a start.

The SS disability income is probably the best shot. My son ,who was 43, Had an infection in his knee that specialist couldn't cure even with operations. He had to take high dosages of painkillers. He had to get a lawyer to get it thru, but the lawyer worked on commission. He collected The SS till his death.

:( . My condolences . Well he was a lucky man to have such a kind father. You had to shoulder the loss of losing a child... There could be nothing more heart wrenching .

Jimmie use the lawyer as a last resort 3 Dr's sign the disability and you should be home free. The drain on the system are not from legit disabilities. This is one she deserves.

It's all so confusing!! I'm not good at figuring out my own insurances... Trying to do this is making my brain hurt. Not to mention she is a neat freak and has thrown out every scrap of paper that woulda given me info I needed.
