A similar button was posted recently. Does that mark in the center on the back look like it could have been where a shank was? Based on French ECU coinage.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies...I bought this over 25 years ago at an estate sale in
Hawaii. Much earlier than when the ECU was formed. I also bought other things that turned out to be quite old and contempory with the medallion.. The mark on the blank side middle is quite small
and does not appear to have had a shank at any given time.
If this was made in 1788 what was it used for? was it attached to a travelling chest maybe?
I do not think that it was used as coinage due to the large diameter size.

Regards to all

pictures are too small to tell.. ECU is French Thaler..no way it was made in 1788..maybe in revolutionary years..then was total Anarchy and also in counterfeiting coinage :icon_pirat: .. i have samples that are looking more like piece of some plain metal then a real coin.
With bigger pictures i can tell if it is a modern copy.

Looks much the same as the modern cast reproductions, so that for the most part dates it. No idea what it was used for, but that's the piece of info. that's missing here.
