MD'ing, Saving the lives of Marines and Soldiers in Iraq

Thought I should share these photos, they were taken in Iraq near Fallujah in 06. A friend was gracious enough to provide me with some photos of his deployment and these were on the CD's.

What you are seeing is a weapons cache located by, what else, a MD'er. The photos show the cache hole and they actually sent a soldier into it to retrieve all the ammunition, explosives, and electronic signal devices such as cell phones and remotes. The explosives would have been used for IED's (improvised explosive devices) also known or referred to as roadside bombs. The number of lives saved by this find are overwhelming.

So chalk one up for the good guys and MD'ers alike. A best find for sure.

Everything you would want to know about the US Military AN-PSS12 metal detector but was afraid to ask:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/an-pss-12.htm

And its newest brother, the AN-PSS14:
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/hstamids.htm

Oh, and a whole list of military detecting stories, stright from the source: http://ccsweb.pica.army.mil/2counter/articles_2coun.htm

Quote from AN-PSS14 info: They also have trouble distinguishing nails, shrapnel and other clutter that often leads to false alarms. ;)

Re: MD'ing, Saving the lives of Marines and Soldiers in Iraq

Thanks Dave great site: its a PI unit

The AN/PSS-12 Mine Detector is capable of detecting mines in fresh or salt water, and objects buried up to 20 inches in the ground.

UP to 20 inches I WANT ONE.............. Its made to locate the small metalic firing pin since most landmines are now more plastic then metal.
