MDing Cape Cod ?

I went to Cape Cod two summers ago, staying in Harwich Port and in Provincetown. The Cape's beaches are rather narrow, and many are gravelly. Many are private and restricted. I would try hunting the wet sand at low tide, and off-hours at public sandy beaches that are heavily used during the day. I'd avoid the gravel beaches, as rings, etc. don't sink down as they do where there is soft sand. I don't recall seeing any restrictions on the use of metal detectors on public beaches, but as I said, I had no real luck on the beaches anyway and would prefer to go elsewhere. My most disappointing experience was stopping excitedly at an abandoned bungalow colony I espied on the beach outside Provincetown (the beach houses must have been built in the '20s), and finding nothing old or valuable. On the plus side, I saw no other metal detectorists on the beaches during the week I sojourned at the Cape, so you won't have much competition. Good luck.

Most of the Cape is National Sea Shore and metal detecting or removal of artifacts is not something anyone in authority would look favorably upon..Would you metal detect at the National Mall in Washington ? Massachusetts DCR does allow detetecting on certain state beaches under conditions set by the beach supervisor. Try this for State Beach Info..http://www.mass.gov/dcr/ Enjoy your visit to the Cape.

My bad: Just looked it up on National Parks pages:

"Metal Detectors: 36 CFR 2.1(a)(7) prohibits use of metal detectors in all national parks."

This applies to coastal seashore that are national parks; however BLM land and some other federal lands can be MT'ed but restrictions apply (usually age of objects found). Sorry for the misinformation before.

National Mall? might do it - not a national park, might get hassled, but would be an interesting test case ;)

That would be a good test case if one or two thousand turned up with their detectors and started " coin detecting" using a non-threatning sweep technique in unison. Just keep in mind that for ever ten tourist on the mall there is at least one "enforcer of official rules and regulations" out there.. Could be quite a demonstration.. plenty of press..
Now please pass me that "coolaid". Off to the ocean........
