Where abouts in RI are you from? I live in Coventry.

When you ask is it "legal to detect wooded areas" in Virginia, you don't say who owns the particular woods you have in mind. Ie.: federal woods? (of which there can still be multiple levels/layers/types), state land? (of which there can be levels/layers/types), county land, city land, or private land.

Once you get your answer as to what entity owns the particular "forest" where you're going to, then just do this: Find their website (afterall, seems that every city or county or state has a website nowadays, eh?). Once there, do a key-word search under "metal detectors" (perhaps there's even a sub-category for just their laws/codes, or just their park's dept, etc....). If nothing pops up (ie.: silent on the subject of metal detecting), then presto, there's your answer. It must therefore not be prohibited.

Be real careful in Virginia. There is so much protected land because of all the history there. Federal & State parks are off limits to detectorists. Most property owners are very aware of relic hunters and a lot of them will make life miserable for you if you are caught without seeking permission first. Lots of "No Trespassing" signs....
