Hello All,

First off, let me say that I Hate posting rusty iron in this forum. HATE it. When folks ask to have some rusty blob identified, I normally run the other way screaming like a guy who has dug over 2,000 lbs. of rusty iron. The reason I am posting this one before electrolysis is that I have fallen Way behind with getting my iron cleaned. That is also part of the reason I want to figure out if this is what I think it is before I put it in the queue to be cleaned.

Here it is:

Thank you all for your help! (And did I happen to mention that I HATE posting uncleaned rusty iron in this forum?)

Best Wishes,

Buckles

You may find some proof marks when you clean it. Chances are Brit or Belgian...

I will look for proof marks. I have decided I will use the molasses method of rust removal on this one, to see if the method works. It's a lot cheaper to buy molasses than electricity, less damaging to the find if it works, and less involved (I can sit back and let it work for a few weeks). Plus, if I had enough buckets, I could clean most of my back log of iron in a few weeks. In short, I hope it works. But it will still take some time to get the piece cleaned. I am aiming for August 7th, but I'll know more about a week in.
Best Wishes, Buckles

Can't wait to see it clean Buck!!

Molasses method...do tell!

http://www.syrupmakers.com/rust/

The barrel has been in the soup for five days now, and I can't tell much difference--but there isn't much froth on the top, so I may add more molasses to the mix.

If it works, I'm thrilled--since it is so low maintenance and I can do many pieces at once. (And I'll make a new post in the Preservation section of the forum.) If it fails, I'll update this thread to let everyone know.
