Hello All,

First off, let me say that I Hate posting rusty iron in this forum. HATE it. When folks ask to have some rusty blob identified, I normally run the other way screaming like a guy who has dug over 2,000 lbs. of rusty iron. The reason I am posting this one before electrolysis is that I have fallen Way behind with getting my iron cleaned. That is also part of the reason I want to figure out if this is what I think it is before I put it in the queue to be cleaned.

Here it is:

Thank you all for your help! (And did I happen to mention that I HATE posting uncleaned rusty iron in this forum?)

Best Wishes,

Yep I agree, Buck. Almost..............................
I'm thinking maybe a double barrel muzzle loading pistol.
Great find nonetheless!

We found a double-barrel in a privy here in PA last year. Your item looks just like a a piece of the barrel :icon_thumright:

Thank you all for your replies. I am marking this one Solved, and putting it in line to get either electrolysis or molasses bath.

I found these photos online, finally--and they seal the deal for me. The flat top in between the barrels, and the cleft in between the barrels on the bottom. Looks like this was a black powder gun.

You may find some proof marks when you clean it. Chances are Brit or Belgian...

I will look for proof marks. I have decided I will use the molasses method of rust removal on this one, to see if the method works. It's a lot cheaper to buy molasses than electricity, less damaging to the find if it works, and less involved (I can sit back and let it work for a few weeks). Plus, if I had enough buckets, I could clean most of my back log of iron in a few weeks. In short, I hope it works. But it will still take some time to get the piece cleaned. I am aiming for August 7th, but I'll know more about a week in.

Best Wishes,

Buckles

Hey Tim, It's a little glob of drywall mud. The kind of texture is called a "French plaster", I do it all the time in my line of work. The guy just forgot to knock it down with his trowl.
