Apparently I'm officially classified as an expert on rusty things by a few friends, so I was asked to identify a big old rusty thing. It was found by an abandoned rail line in NJ and appears to be some kind of switch. It is stamped with the "Schiffer 5 1/2 x 11". That's really all I know about it. My guess is that it's part of some kind of railroad switch, but I don't know.

Nothing that I recall ever seeing with any switches. The picture would not enlarge, could not get a better look.

It looks like a handle, but I’m not convinced about the RR switch idea. There were A LOT of different renditions of switches used throughout the railroad years. I’m not familiar with but a few. The hole in the pivot handle should align with something, or something was mounted through it. I’m sure you’ll get good info soon. This site has a lot of knowledgeable members.

What Name is on it?

It really looks to me like the first version of the modern push-down-to-open door lever handle. You can see the screw holes at each end to attach it to a door. handle.
