Could be from a old game piece or frat type symbol. Sure does look very old. Looked in some button books but could not find it, nothing on the back? Good luck im sure someone here can help you better!

prob gonna need exact size to see if its military or not mainly because its an iron back button.

The OP (Original Poster, who is BigDawg30701) said its size is "a little over a quarter inch." Its extremely small size excludes it from being an ironbacked button. In my opinion, it is the 1/4" stud-cap from the back of a rivet-button.
