I'm thinking this may be a match safe, but I'm just guessing. I got lucky and found the lid about 2 foot from the case. The house where I found it burned in the 1950's. Does that sound about right for age? Also does anyone know the name of the pattern? And last question, the only mark I can see is where the lid shuts. I think it says "C SiLVER". Does that mean coin silver or something like that? Thanks for any help.

That is a sweet find, and you got the lid too, Congrats !!! Can’t help on the C Silver , I’m not an expert on match safes but it looks older than the 50s, maybe early 1900s ?

Late 1800’s would be my guess, as would be “G Silver” (meaning German Silver), which isn’t real silver. German Silver is a mix of nickel, zinc and copper. The copper is why it has some green patina, but not as much as it would if were solid copper.

Thanks for the help. German silver is several times better than the tin foil silver I usually get. I'll be walking all the way across the driveway to the old foundation again when it warms back up. Thanks again.

I would think it's a match safe as you already suggested, looks to be late-Victorian in design.
What you want to look for is a 'ribbed' or 'serrated' portion on the base where the match would've been struck.

Nice find,
Dave

I have found many of these and screwed up each one I found digging it out.

Congrats to you on this find.

randywa, what a great find. Just look at that detail. Bet it has a story to tell.

Thanks for all the input and comments. I told my wife that I may watch too much ID Channel. A house that burned down 60 or more years ago and an empty match safe .Just a coincidence? :laughing7:
