Some of us claim that when we dig up coins sometimes ants are all around it.So Mastereagle22 i did some research.I called 5 pest control companies to see like Montana Jim suggested.Four of them hung up on me and one said i kill them who cares. :D Taking this as a no i decided to take this subject to another level.I visited AntBase.org under ant taxonomists(big word). Then i emailed Phil Ward of the University of California Davis. ;D I told him of our experiences and hoped he would have an answer.IF he doesnt think we are crazy and emails me ill let you know.Yours truely aa Ant Investigator.P.S. I wont give up till this is solved ::)

I'm new here and I can't find the other thread. I might be able to answer your question, If I just could find it. lol I am the VP of a pest control company and have my CO in Georgia and South Carolina. Theres a chance I could answer the question, if not I'm sure I can find the answer for you.

Welcome Tim i hope maybe you can give us a clue 8) AA

I have a theory or 2, but its just theory based on my knowledge of ant behavior.

A coin or piece of metal would make for a good addition to any ant nest. Metal close to the surface would provide warmth to the nest on those cold fall and spring nights. As we all know Ants are working 24-7. As the ground warms up in the day time so does the metal and with millions of little feet pacing back and forth all day and night the metal keeps it warmth through the night. They would most likely rather it be a coin or small piece of metal, because there movement would not create enough energy to retain the heat in a larger object.

The metal can also be a small source of moisture for the nest.

Beware of the Fire Ant, and Yellow Jackets. They can ruin your day fast.

That sounds good so far.I have another theory iam working on ill post it later. :) AA

Face it...you guys are way off base with all the scientific theories.

Ants are just greedy like everyone else and pick up those coins laying around and stash them for a rainy day.

There!!! Solved!

In all actuality, when an ant finds a metallic disc shaped object in the ground it reminds them of days gone by. Back in the old days,a million or so years ago , ants where much larger than they are now. They came to this planet to start human farms as a new food supply, food was getting scarce on their planet because there were way too many ants. Something tragic happened and in the process of starting their little human farms, the humans, which were a very organized and intellectual society, gathered together to capture the queen. Once they had her they force fed her with a serum they had developed which they named ant-o-globin, it reverses the growth process of ants, making them shrink in size. At the same time the humans had developed another drug called HGH that made themselves grow to enormous size. As the years went by and the ants continued to shrink in size and the humans continued to grow, their roles became reversed only the humans didn't eat ants so they now number into the gazillions. Somewhere deep in the brain of these ants they remember, mostly by instinct now, that they came to this planet in a metallic, round object. So it's only natural that they build their homes around coins, as they wait for the mother ship to come back and lead them home.

Digg you do think out of the box :D AA

Maybe ants follow trails of droped coins and or anything that a human has touched, knowing it would lead to more FOOD!!!! I can't get rid off them. :-\
So...no more cookie crumbs. :)

I still think they are collecting water from the metals. ;)

I agree 100%.

Insects need warmth, without it they go into slow motion.

You'd be hard pressed to sway me in another direction other then this theory.

Insects are simple to understand, no heat, no bugs.

More heat, more bugs.

Warm coin = warm bugs ;)

BTW, I think there was even another thread concerning this subject...
