Mass. state trooper charged with extortion

Updated: 01/03/12 at 5:01 pm

BOSTON -- A Massachusetts state trooper appeared in court on Tuesday and was charged with extortion. Police say the trooper ran a bookie operation and then threatened to kill his business partner who turned into an FBI informant.

State Trooper John M. Analetto was brought into a courtroom with handcuffs on Tuesday and was charged with extortion in connection with a gambling ring.

The FBI investigation included a cooperating witness wired with a hidden camera.

A home video shows FBI agents arresting State Trooper John M. Analetto of Belmont on Saturday.

“I heard a loud bang and I didn’t really think much of it. I heard quite a bit of yelling and when I looked out the window I saw a whole bunch of SUVs that were blacked out with lights and everything. A bunch of guys in SWAT gear with M16s and shotguns,” said Damien Renzi, a witness.

Witness Kristen Nill was able to take a video of Saturday’s arrest of Trooper Analetto which took place at a Belmont gas station.

“In the beginning I just heard a bunch of shouting and telling someone to get down on the ground, get out of the car and then by the time I looked out the window, they had his car surrounded, sort of pinned in...They had come at him from the front and from the back and it forced whoever was driving out of the car and onto the ground,” said Kristen Nill, a witness.

According to a federal criminal complaint, Trooper Analetto became a bettor in an illegal interstate gambling business. He started extorting money from an individual in that business, who later became a cooperating witness for the FBI.

Officials say they have Trooper Analetto on video threatening to kill the cooperating witness if the witness did anything to affect his state police pension, saying “Will I kill you? Ya, I’ll [expletive] kill you.”

Speaking about another bettor, officials quote Trooper Analetto as saying he “…would break into the individual’s house and physically harm the bettor and sexually assault the bettor’s mother.”

There was no comment from the trooper’s family members as they left the federal courthouse on Tuesday. His attorney, however, cautioned against a rush to judgment.

“All I can say at this particular time is that the situation is not as it appears, and that’s all I can say right now because we have very little discovery,” Trooper Analetto’s attorney said.

A state police spokesman said that, “The department is disgusting with the trooper’s alleged actions.” Trooper Analetto’s firearms, his cruiser, and badge have all been confiscated.

Trooper Analetto has been suspended without pay indefinitely. The state police spokesman also said the department is eager to assist the FBI with the case.

Trooper Analetto is being held until his detention hearing later this week.
