Metal Detecting
Detected a field that was farmed from the colonial times to the early 1900s several times over the last few weeks, most recently this morning. I found some coins and interesting artifacts. The best coin is probably the 1904 Barber quarter. I love Indian Head pennies, and a couple of these are dated from the late 1800s. However, they are in rough shape, and hitting one with the shovel didn't help...aaargggh. My favorite relic is probably the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia Button, which I think is from pre Civil War or Civil War era. Also found the top of an apostle spoon, which could date from the 1600 s. Not sure which apostle this depicts, though he seems to be holding a bag in his right hand, so it might be Judas holding his payment for betraying Jesus (or maybe that's my imagination). Also found a metallic smoking pipe looking object, though the stem seems like it's either plugged or solid. Feels like pewter to me, though that would not make much sense for a smoking pipe. I might post it on the what-is-it forum. In the center of the total finds picture is a very small, ornate pocket knife, which looks pretty cool to me - 1800s? Can't wait to go back to this field. The signals are few, but they are often pretty good targets. Thanks for checking out my post. Happy Hunting!
