Mason's and Cherokee Finds - Franklin, N.C.
I absolutely love rockhounding in Franklin, N.C., and of the mines there, my two favorites are Cherokee Ruby Mine and Mason's Ruby and Sapphire Mine (not to be confused with Mason Mountain, on 28). Both totally unsalted operations with the most helpful and wonderful staff-- the family that runs Cherokee are really about the nicest folks you will ever meet. Some of our finds so far this year-
Stones we had cut at the Cowee Valley Lapidary... the ones in the top row are from Cherokee; bottom two rows from Mason's-
Rubies, sapphires, garnet, and rutile from Cherokee Mine-
A 34 (or 35.5-- got two different readings on it, lol) ct. sapphire from our latest visit to Cherokee a few days ago-
A 4.6 ct. violet sapphire and a ruby that my husband is holding; found in the same screen at Cherokee-
Sapphires found on a trip to Mason's... the one in the top left is 6.5 ct.-
For any interested, I have a lot more pics and video on my Franklin gem mining page, and in the photo albums I link to there- http://pakasdollmaker.com/gemmining.html
