I found this ring today, I believe the outside to be copper, inside 18k gold, do you know anything about these markings? looks like a cat and a crown

**UPDATE.............I took a new pic today after I polished it, the copper color is all gone and the outside is as shiny gold as the inside now, so the person who said the gold was only plated and worn off was not correct at all!

Re: markings inside gold ring?

Google "gold hallmarks"

Why do you say copper and gold? Inquiring minds want to know.

why would gold be copper coated? I dont know the markings but it seems more logical that the ring is gold plated copper and the gold has worn off the outside.

not sure, but my mom collects antique jewelry and has one almost identical to it, hers looks exactly the same. She told me the outside was copper??? Is she wrong? When I dug it up the inside was shiny right out of the hole but the outside was green like an old copper penny

Re: markings inside gold ring?

I can’t tell you about the Hallmark but that ring is 75% Gold, and it does not have a copper coating. It may appear to have a copper coating and that's most likely because the purer the gold is, the “orange” (I made up that word) the color will look. Outstanding find indeed my friend.

Good Luck.

Unfortunately, I'd have to disagree. If you read the response, he says the outside was "green like an old copper penny". I've yet to see anything 18K gold come out of a hole green like that. I'd be more inclined to believe that it's a copper ring that was plated gold and the gold wore off the outside, but lasted longer on the inside because it was protected. Karat markings and hallmarks are only as believable as the maker's honesty. I've found more than one ring marked 14K that was nothing more than gold plated. They shine up nicely just like a penny would, but they're still copper.

I missed the part about the outside being green and the inside being gold. And if that is the case I agree it’s not solid gold and must be plated or lined. True 18k gold will not change very much. I have found old 18k, 14k and 10k gold rings that had black or very dark green tarnish in the cracks and crevices, but never on the ring as a whole. The ring cleaned up like new with short household ammonia soak and a good scrubbing with a toothbrush, toothpaste and dish soap.

How did you clean it?

You should be able to see the spots that the eletroplate starts and stops.

Re: markings inside gold ring?

The crown and the 18 were used for marking 18 K gold from 1798 - 1974 in Great Britain. As for the "cat" ,Lion Passant, it usually stands for sterling silver. Also, there is usually a letter for the year it was hallmarked, so, without more research, I am kinda at a loss for an exact breakdown at the moment.

Hope it helps some

Re: markings inside gold ring?

This topic struck a memory of what I found about 8 years ago. Around an old house, I've found a WWII oblong dog tag and a WWI round dogtag. On other visits, not far from the side of the same house I found two bands that are gold on the inside and darker on the outside.

The heavier of the two rings has a "14" cast in it and to the left is a 3-leaf clover emblem cast. Both markings are cast inside a box-shaped inset. The outside of this ring seems to have a black trail inset from the edges and appears to be rather irregular. Any ideas about that?

The other ring is thinner and narrower. It's worn on the inside so I cannot see the emblem but there is what appears to be an "11" stamped in it.

I don't have a camera and I don't think my scanner can get a picture inside of the rings, but both have a thin vertical line that appears to be a silver color. All your help is appreciated.

Re: markings inside gold ring?

Lads, I am familiar with hallmarks from this part of the world, and that is an 18 k solid gold ring. As an earlier poster said, the gold appears more orange because it is alloyed with copper as opposed to silver, etc. That's common for English gold jewelry. Great find!

OKay, why would it have come out of the ground green? :icon_scratch:

Because the gold is alloyed with copper, it's 75% gold and 25% copper, and it was in the ground for a long time.

you are the second person to tell me this today about it being alloyed with copper, and yes it WAS in the ground for a long time!

Re: markings inside gold ring?

This is a very old 18k gold ring; it must have been in the ground at least 70 years or longer. Alloyed gold 10 k or purer does not trun green. The other rings in this thread had been in the ground at least 40 years.

This is a silver ring marked 14k, yeah it’s a fake or bootleg.

And after a lot of elbow grease the fake 14k ring came out like this:

Now you can compare what you have with what I pulled up, you be the judge.
