Markings in trees

Were they on city property? Many cities will mark or tag trees on city property for inventory/arborist purposes.
 

Solo curious what they are!!! I'm brand new and cannot figure out how to post the pics but I can remember the numbers and letters....I also posted elsewhere not realizing this thread was available...

The markings were on three or four differentaspen trees

I should add its dead in the middle of the woods at an old mining site...
 

That's a canary log. They used canaries to monitor the air quality in the mines. When a canary stopped singing or died, it was a warning to get out of the mine. K 27 = 27 canaries killed. 8 lc = 8 lost canaries.

Aspen grow pretty fast. If they were marked back in the day..."old mining site" the marks would be unreadable by now.
