Hi, I ran across two stones nearby; they look like gravestones in a way. I've never seen stones like these naturallly, and wonder what their significance may be. I havent seen where rocks stand up like that on their own; it would take probably 3 -5 strong men to position the larger one as it is situated. Mayber they're natural, maybe they're not....any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: Stones in yard

Thanks. The cat is indeed modern. The smaller stone is only 28 inches off the ground, and looks like a top piece of it was broken off and then re-glued or whatever back into position. Notice what appears to be drips. Strangely, the glued-back-on piece, is of different color than the rest. With all the neglect of this place when we bought it, I find it hard to fathom that if they broke a piece of stone in the front yard that they would have repaired it, in favor of all else 'round here needing done.

The larger one, about 75 feet away, is 50 inches off the ground and 9 inches thick - probably weighs 600+ lbs including the part of its that planted. Both are presently angled to pointing north. The stone at the base of the big one makes a nice place to sit. Would have been a great place to wait for harvesting deer, the posterity of whom still roam in abundance.

I always harbored the sentiment that they were graves. If so, their occupants are definitely not nearly as impolite as some of the walking dead & other thieves, snakes, and scoundrels I've encountered. !

I'll take the 1969 White's Coinmaster out back to that old tree again right now.

It certainly looks like the position of the stones didn't occur naturally, a mystery for sure.

Doc

Yeah, a good mystery. I doubt they're gravemarkers; the indians didn't use stones like that to my knowledge, and the white settlers' gravesites are well known in their markings. These are in the vicinty of San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, a place where the Spanish were documented to be in the early 1500's. On one old map, this area is in the highly mineralized region; in Llano you can pan for gold and they even used to operate mines in the 20th century.

Thanks to gldhntr for posting the link on the headstones.

There's lichens growing on it and what appear to be faint markings but many areas of different color. I'm thiniking of hitting it with some bleach to kill the plants / algae, rinse it off, then hit it with a VERY dilute hydrochloric acid solution...... Thanks everyone for commenting !

Could very well be trail markers and some sort of Ultraviolet may reveal markings, you know like blacklight???

Doc

Trail markers sounds interesting. An adventure maybe? Ultraviolet though, I need some more info to believe that.

Re: Stones in yard

Hi eyez

did you ever probe in front of the smaller one to see if there is a "seat" part to that one too that is now buried?
It is shaped like the bigger one in the top section and looks like it too could be a stone chair??

Re: Stones in yard

If it were my property I would dig down around them and if they were graves then cover them back up and let them rest..At least you would know then for sure Bob

No I haven't ! Although I did manage to move the "seat" rock from away from the base of the larger one, then scanned the ground with MD, but nothing detected. Moving it back into place was tougher. It does make a nice seat, especially would be good as a deer blind for the local Apache.

Thanks,

I'll try a little digging, maybe down a foot, then scan with detector for metal. If no metal, I won't go further, it's 110 deg here.
Thanks,

Re: Stones in yard

I think you guys are right about being a grave, but it could be an altar of some kind.

Trail markers with distance and direction printed upon them. Ultraviolet light, I believe, reacts with lead from the old paint, what do you think?

That would be neat. I'll get a black light on it today.

Thanks,

Best of luck. Let us know if there was something to read. They used to use a lot of lead in the paint in the early days. You can find a cheap 12-volt black light and use it for looking for minerals too.

Doc

Hi, the black light reveals nothing. At least it was worth a try. I forget which would fluoresce, plumbane or litharge. Oh well, don't matter now. Thanks for the suggestion.

They do look like grave markers. You might try doing a little research on the property at your County Recorders Office. I've run into a couple of cases where very old and abandoned or forgotten Cemetery's were moved to make way for progress and a few headstones were left. A metal detector around them or a probe would be a couple of ways to see if graves are present. Early ones can be very shallow. Archy types use the probe often to find burials.
