I found this a while ago and don't have much of an idea what it is. If anyone could help me out itd be nice. It weighs 24gs, and on the face of the coin it says "Honoring the American Indian Marine" and on the back there is a "4" in the center and it says "Fourth Marine Division Association" around the coin. Any information will be appreciated

Here are some pictures

That COULD be what is known as a "challenge coin", but I don't think so. I think it is a commemorative coin. Those are HUUUUGE pics, lol.

Thanks for the reply, and sorry about the large pictures. Do you think the coin has any silver in it? I wish I could find more on why the coin was given out and whom it was given to.

I don't THINK it has any silver, mainly from the colour and the size. I think it is brass. I'm checking some "challenge" and commemorative coins for that division.. The only problem is, there are SOOO many of both for ANY military unit.

"The 46th anniversary of the bloody World War II battle of Okinawa in the Pacific Ocean comes up April 1. Too few people realize that Navajo Indians, who volunteered to serve their country, contributed immeasurably to the success of this invasion and that of Iwo Jima on Feb. 19, 1945, with their "code talk."

"Navajo code talkers on each end of a communication line or radio would pass on commands in their native tongue, saving precious time and lives by eliminating the need to code and decode during the height of combat, confusing the Japanese, who could not break the code. Their accuracy is legendary, yet these Navajo warriors were given little recognition, so little that the Fourth Marine Division Association on its own had a commemorative medal struck honoring the American Indian Marine. "
You have a valuable piece of that history.
