I found this Marine Corps cuff ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1578435459.985334.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1578435482.600724.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1578435509.188182.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1578435541.455648.jpgImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1578435561.106715.jpgbutton today with the 13 stars. The only thing I can make out for a backmark is Bros & Co. I couldn’t ID from the backmark chart. Might be due to the shank being bent. Any ideas?
Thanks

Nice find. I’m sure someone will know that back mark.:icon_thumright:

May be Hortsmann Bros & Co. Philadelphia. They were in business from 1859 - 1893 and made some Marine buttons.

Spats' guess (he said "may be") is correct. H. Bros & Co. [Phila.] is a known cuff-button Horstmann backmark… according to the excellent guidebook "American Military Button Makers And Delaers; Their Backmarks & Dates" by McGuinn & Bazelon.

Another possibility for the backmark is "HORTSMANN BROS & CO *" which according to McGuin and Bazelon was used on post Civil War versions of their MC10Av. which is a Marine cuff button. The reason I suggest this backmark is that I can see what may be the HO on one side of the shank and the NN on the other. There should be a * after the CO although I don't see it. Diggerranger, can you make out the HO and the NN that I see or am I just seeing things again?

I think you are correct about the HO and NN. The * might be there somewhere but too worn.

I believe you are right I definitely see a O on one side of the shank and it’s the second letter.
