Marbles

I find mine in school yards and playground, they just happen to come up when digging for a coin,

Railroad used to use thousands of them on their loading docks. They were used to roll hug heavy crates easily by sliding them across the glass marbles. Maybe alot of them got redistributed .

marbles was a very popular game around 1900. i think a lot of kids lost them around then.

Gold,

could be there are a lot of loose marbles among our members ;D

I know I've lost a few.

have a good un........

;) Another consideration is that a lot of hunting is done in construction areas. ?I know I hit any sidewalk and street repair I can find and marbles turn up on a regular basis. ?All it takes is a little rain.

I found a few of mine in the small wooded areas in back of my neighbors yard, just sitting on top of the ground, they were mid 1900's.

Marbles was a very popuilar game on the school ground in the early 1950s here in my home town. No, not 1850's! I was the sixth grade champ and once had several thousand I won playing that forbidden game of "Keeps"! Several kids brought really neat marbles from home that were given to them by their Dads and Granddads. I had several agates, some clay marbles , but mostly glass marblesthat you could buy for about a dime a dozen. I have usually found marbles at house demo sites where I also found toys or parts of toys, just about any household with kids had marbles. Right after a good hard rain on a vacant lot is a good place to find them. The one old purple clay marble I have found dates back to the 1920s and I found it on a vacant lot where a house had burned. There is big $$$ in some marbles but I have no desire to sell any of the ones I have found MDing. Monty

I'm a big marble fan! Was it you that was the 6th grade marble champ 3 years in a row? ;)

Ok Monty
So your the guy that got my tigereyes!!!! I caught hell at home when I lost all my marbles.

Three years but not all in a row! That is about the size of the cardboard box full of marbles I use to have. When I went to the service Mom found them in my old closet along with my baseball card collection and gave them away when they moved. They were always moving and not telling me where they lived! So, if anyone bought a box of marbles and a baseball card collection from Salvation Army, they were mine! Includied was my autographed Mickey Mantle rookie card now worth about ten thousand dollars! Marbles always bring back happy thoughts and memories.

I too was a marble champ back in the 50's. I often thought about returning to that old school playground though I bet it's been hunted a thousand times.

It seems that every time we have any ground work done around here I find at least a half dozen marbles.

Zeb, I just live a few blocks from my old grade school. I did go up and detedt the playground, but it has all changed. It has been backfilled with several feet of dirt and all new playground toys have been installed. Where there is no toys and chips, it's blacktopped over. That's where I had to climb over the gate and met up with that security guard in the story I posted several weeks ago. All I found was a little clad. Monty
