marble finds

A different kind of value..

All of the marbles made from 1915 to 1951 are vivid reminders of times-past when men sweated over vats of molten glass in competition to produce marbles to sell to children for pennies. And kids are hard to please. Glass-artists lost sleep thinking up new designs, new colors, new materials to sell a penny marble. That kind of single-minded effort demanded character the likes of which we seldom see today.

Save your melted marbles..

Marbles dug at old trash dumps are often melted. This because oldsters burned their garbage for health reasons. You don't want rats and other vermin living in your town's garbage dump. And boy did they burn it! Hot enough to melt glass. So a lot of the marbles dug at old garbage dumps are partially melted. Don't throw them away because they're not perfect. They can be made into jewelry. Earrings, bracelets, etc. Don't run them thru a rock tumbler. They'll fall apart if you do. It amazes me that some people dig up melted marbles and throw them back in the dirt 'cause they're not perfect. They are still unique and colorful.
