Found this one detecting today. About 16” deep and 36” wide with no rot. I heard they make bowls out of these. Can anyone tell me more? DB2813BE-E873-4B72-9C03-A3DC83CCD4D5.jpeg

Unfortunately that’s a pretty low quality (onion burl) that one isn’t very likely to have very killer grain. Just swoopy grain patterns.

If your into harvesting burl you’ll mostly be looking for (eyed burl) or pins. Basically the tree try’s to from branches that die right as the break the bark. That creates those eyes, or pins that make for such pretty burl.

That’s a leaverite.

The other thing is all the shrooms. They make the wood go powdery. Don't think I'd risk throwing it on a lathe. Leave it for the next guy to enjoy.

Cool Scrappy! By the way, Everett Poole passed away last week, end of an era in Menemsha/Chilmark.

The shrooms killed that one. You might be able to stabilize it but would take a lot of filler.
I turn wood bowls on occasion when my lathe is set up.I also cut my own wood.
My brother in law has a garage full of sealed wood to turn. He is really into it.

Saw a show called "Filthy Riches" that covered burl tree hunters.

Burls are caused from an injury. I like to slab out and turn the crotch of a tree, Easier to find around here.

Burls are nice for making bowls, duck calls, turkey calls, pen blanks and much more. Places like Wood Barter can give you much info on harvesting, processing, trading, selling the burls.

Cool thanks guys for the replies. That’s a ton of knowledge , and I appreciate all the educated comments

I cut this one from a red oak for a customer. Turned down a pair of candle sticks for my wife.
