I have looked at this so long I hallucinate when I look at it. I think it's pewter and was really ugly when I found it. I've been picking at it and even used some Brasso* ::) , well lo and behold there is something there.
I think I have it oriented up and down... right hand corner I thought was a date but now looks like D S or D 8 or I don't know... looks like bigger letters on the midsection. Shank was a large one of some other crappy type metal that was rusted up and eventually I broke it looking for a backmark (of which I see none)

Maybe rev war? Found in the same dirt down the street as the half a real I posted a last week or so.

p.s. sorry for the blurry pics...I just cant seem to get a good one on this

Re: Manky button trying to say something

Doing a quick search I think you have a British 2nd Foot Guards (Coldstream Guards), but I think they were not down south, I will check further, but for now it is very similar. I will post a photo shortly of it and you can compare.

Added: Here is a photo: Reference "Military Buttons of the American Revolution" By Don Troiani.

Re: Manky button trying to say something

Man, yall are amazing, much respect to ya....thanks alot for the info. Reading about the Coldstream Guards will give me something to do after blowing a nasty gash in my hand with a pressure washer yesterday. :o ER's are so much fun.

The neighbor whose yard this came out of is getting the backhoe again today... moving the dirt from last week and digging some new holes.... I hope I heal quick, I may have to risk infection anyway. ;D

here is an early picture. I had it upside down... I can see from the example how that S would look like an 8 like it does in this photo.

thanks again...

Re: Manky button trying to say something

This sounds like a good find. Someone else mentioned this guard not being here (South Carolina).

And just to clarify as to who actually found it, (glad to see I hadn't "claimed it" already), this button was found by my old buddy with the same beat up Garrett 150 that found the Charlotte mint gold coin. I'm calling that machine the "MaGarrett" from now on.

Guy moved around alot of dirt yesterday.... this week might end up being fun afterall.

We gave this button to a guy who is somewhat of a collector historian. Since he got it, he says he has talked to some other relic people who have found Coldstream Guard buttons on the same island. Pretty interesting considering it has been thought they were not here.

One thing I really enjoy about this hobby is learning about this stuff... :icon_study:

Nice find

In the movie "Gettysburg" there was a Cold Stream Guard Captain who traveled with the Confederates. Sir Arthur Fremantle of Her Majesty's Cold Stream Guards, never wore a red uniform at all whilst at Gettysburg. He wore grey to blend in with the Confederates
