Got out for the first time in a couple weeks, found this bone, I suspect Buffalo but could be a portion of a large long bone off a deer. I like to clean them to look for cut mark’s I didn’t see any of those but it did have this notch in it. I haven’t seen another bone with such a mark on it from this site, it sure seems man made. So I was hoping to see a swirl like they drilled it but I don’t see that, looks more like they may have made cuts repeatedly until they had a notch. What do you guys think? Is it man made? Maybe a notch to wind cordage or maybe it’s half of a hafted tool?

Other than this potentially interesting artifact got a few bits of pottery and a bit of what I suspect is a washita type point that snapped at the notches

It looks like an old piece of bone, but it's really hard to say if it ever had been modified by man for a purpose. The notch IMO is the result of teeth marks from a small rodent.

It is 100% bone no doubt, it doesn’t look like any rodent activity I am aware of, no paired marks, clean edge, no marks anywhere else on the bone, I went to check my facts and while I didn’t look long I saw that cats and canines can leave a puncture but rodents really just make a mess of bones, to me it looks too intentional.

The notch looks quite similar to notches used by some NA tribes on the ends of bows, to tie the string to it.
Possibly this type of notch had other uses as well. The style of notch was definitely known and used by many.

Thanks For the replies, it may have to be a mystery for now. My gut says it’s man made but as to why or what it was… I don’t know.
