Was told by the landowner there was an old stagecoach stop halfway up the mountain. Upon arrival I could clearly see that it had already been dug. This was my only notable find of the day.

Approximate size of a modern half dollar and back is smooth/ blank...any ideas?? Thanks for the help!

Looks like a button or a coin turned into one....

Thinking button after playing with image. Or at least not a coin.

Looks like a decorative neck piece. put the leather or rawhide through the holes and you have a necklace. I also live in a home that was a stagecoach stop in Northport. The oldest house standing and have made lots of great finds. Keep at it.

Cool find! There appears to be the letters "ER" at the 3 o' clock position. Please post a few more pictures from different angles that might reveal more letters.

Obviously those holes are not original to the "disc" so my guess is somebody made a string whizzer out of it.

Sure is a lot of detail. Looking closer there appears to be a crest in the center with a globe inside surrounded by stars arranged in a circle. All that is surrounded by what might be a pair of olive branches. Above the crest is some sort of dome. At the 9 o' clock position there appears to be another letter or two. Not clear as to what this originally was - but maybe someone will know based on these details

Based on your size estimate (half-dollar) it's a Brazilian 80 Reis coin:

The slick side would have had the date, but it's probably 1820's or 1830's. Pretty cool find and the two holes means it was almost certainly converted into a toy "whizzer."

Now that's a beautiful find, considering your site had already been detected. :notworthy:
It may also have been turned into a kids toy called a 'Whizzer'.

Here's an early King George coin I found in 2017, I like to think was turned into a toy as opposed to a button.

Decided to clean up the back and see if I could pull a date & value.

1827 Brazilian 40 Reis coin

You have to wonder about the story behind an 1827 Brazilian coin making its way to a stage stop, in Maine. Great find!
